About Temporary Fencing

Temporary fencing was first brought to the market in the 1960s as a cost-effective and simple solution to create a temporary perimeter around construction sites.

While temporary fencing is still most prevalent in the construction sector, it has been adopted by several other industries due to its effectiveness. It’s typically found at demolition sites, outdoor event locations, and security-sensitive events.

Temporary fencing is designed to create a temporary, often relocatable, perimeter around a site for the safety and security of individuals on either side of the perimeter.

Industry-standard temporary fencing is typically 3.5m wide and 2m tall, comprising a frame made from a bent steel tube that’s covered with steel wire mesh, which are welded together. Often, temporary fencing panels also feature reinforced steel corner gussets for extra strength, and may also weld 4 separate tubes together to create a rectangular temporary fencing frame.

Which temporary fencing type is right for you?

The most cost-effective temporary fencing solution is generally this industry-standard 3.5m x 2m temporary site fencing, mostly used in the construction sector due to its economical value, speed of installation, and extendability with accessories.

For sites requiring additional security and a taller perimeter, V-mesh fencing, like our Defender Paladin Fencing system, is ideal – providing a stronger, more stable, and taller temporary fence with a height of either 2.4m or 3m.

Types of Temporary Fencing Panel

Round-Top

Round-top temporary fencing is the most popular type of temporary fencing panel. The terminology describes a panel frame that has been bent to create a shape with radial curved-top corners.

Standard or Square-Top

This type of temporary fencing panel is usually the most economical, comprising of four steel tubes welded together with each corner at a 90-degree angle, hence the name “square-top”.

Ex-Hire

This phrase is often used to describe used temporary fencing panels that were previously rented on a short-term project. These are often available to be purchased at a cheaper cost, as the panels may have sustained some minor damage whilst on hire.

Temporary Fencing Mesh Types

Anti-Climb Mesh

All of our temporary fencing panels utilise anti-climb mesh, meaning that the apertures of the mesh are narrow (approx. 50mm wide) and difficult for a person to grip and climb over the fencing.

Euro Mesh / Standard Mesh

This type of mesh features wider apertures, which is consequently easier for hands to grip and climb over the fencing. This type of mesh is not recommended for a multitude of applications.

Temporary Fencing Stability

Bracing Methods

Many bracing accessories are available with temporary fencing systems to add extra stability to the fence line. Most commonly, struts or braces are installed to the fencing panels, which are generally galvanised steel tubes in various shapes that can be hammered into soft ground or have weighted ballast added to them to provide extra stability.

Weighted Ballast

Adding weighted ballast to the feet of temporary fencing has proved a popular method of adding stability to fencing. Sometimes bags of sand are used for this, though we wouldn’t recommend it, as the bags can split, causing sand to spill and the ballast to become ineffective. We have developed several weighted ballast options that are purpose-built for temporary fencing, including our BraceBlok™ and SoloBlok™ products.

Wind Load Calculations

Many construction sites now require a wind load calculation to better understand the stabilisation methods and weighted ballast requirements for the location and environment. Locations with higher winds (e.g., on the coast) may require more weighted ballast and stabilisation to ensure a lower risk of fallen fencing.

Temporary Fencing Materials & Powder Coating

As standard, temporary fencing is manufactured from galvanised steel tubes and steel mesh. The galvanising process minimises the likelihood of rusting, ensuring that the fencing panels last longer and are less susceptible to weather damage.

Temporary fencing panels can also be powder-coated in a custom colour to suit company branding or improve visibility. Powder-coating is the process of covering materials with an epoxy powder, which is heated to form a protective layer and can add a coloured finish.

Temporary Fencing Installation

Known for its simplicity and speed, temporary fencing is rapidly and easily installed with very few components required as standard. The most basic set of temporary fencing would typically include a panel, a fence foot, and steel couplers.

The fence panel legs are dropped into the holes of fence feet and secured together to the next fence panel with steel couplers, which are essentially clamps with a steel nut.

Are temporary fencing feet always needed?

Unlike pedestrian barriers, which are available in a fixed-leg, free-standing variety, temporary fencing is designed to be supported with a variety of fence foot types.

This is because they are manufactured to be easy to stack and manoeuvre, something that can be lost when built-in feet are added.

Possible fence foot types include:

Is temporary fencing suitable for very exposed sites?

Very exposed sites often encounter issues with extreme weather and high winds.

Thanks to the wire mesh structure of temporary fencing, the wind can pass right through, making it suitable for even very fast or blustering winds.

Likewise, the galvanised steel construction means that temporary fencing is actually far sturdier than you might realise, and is ideal for both indoor and outdoor use without the risk of rusting.

For extra peace of mind, you could consider a weightier fence foot system and even adding a brace support, which tethers the fencing with another anchor point.

Can temporary fencing be covered with site hoarding?

Whether you want to shield your site from view, prevent unauthorised access, or limit possible access points for vandals and thieves, using site hoarding like hoarding wrap, graphics, or signs is fully possible.

It is not generally possible, however, to use traditional rigid site hoarding – as this is often used in place of temporary fencing, not in addition to it.

In this instance, if you were set on using temporary fencing (if you already had it on site, for example), you could choose from net mesh covers or acoustic noise-reduction tarpaulins – both of which will obscure vision and are designed for use with temp fencing.

The former can also be printed with a design of your choosing, making it informative as well as functional.

Do I need temporary fencing bracing?

Most sites use temporary fencing bracing if they are faced with:

Very exposed areas with high winds and stormy weather
Sites that need extra security measures

If this applies to your project, you can consider temporary fence bracing!

Designed to act as an extra anchor point, the brace is attached directly to the panel and then to the ground at the other end, before it is covered with a fence foot for extra protection. This makes it incredibly hard to tip or lift temporary fencing out of place.

If your site does not have security or weather concerns, you may not need temp fence bracing.
