Why do pedestrian or crowd-control barriers need accessories?
Sometimes called safety barriers or metal barriers, crowd-control barriers are used across multiple industries to guide pedestrians and create safe areas of access.
Sized at just 2.3m x 1.1m, coming up to around waist height, they are useful at construction sites as well as at concerts, circuses, fairs, and everywhere in between.
They usually comprise a bent galvanised steel frame, secured with bars/tubes or wire mesh and loose or fixed legs, depending on the barrier type chosen. This means they may need separate accessories to keep them firmly in place, which can be added to the bottom – as you would with temporary fencing.
Types of crowd-control barriers and their accessory needs
Depending on which type you choose, crowd-control barriers generally come with either fixed or loose legs.
- Fixed-leg safety barriers
Fixed leg barriers are freestanding structures with integrated fixed legs. These barriers can support their own weight without any additional fixings – making them faster to install and relocate.
It can, however, make them slightly more complex to transport.
- Loose-leg metal barriers
Loose leg barriers, however, are without any fixed feet, meaning they require additional crowd-control barrier accessories to help them stand and support their weight.
While these barriers take slightly longer to erect, they can be easier to transport as the structures are completely flat and don’t have the legs that can become interlocked.
With this type of barrier, you will need either:
- Single or double metal feet
Single metal feet are ideal when barriers are standing individually and not being interlinked, but need to be supported whereas double metal feet are designed for barrier systems that require interlinking.
- Traditional fence feet
Fence feet are manufactured from 100% recycled plastic and are available in hi-vis models for better visibility and increased safety.
